EUOC Big Weekend
20/21/22 January 2017
Over a thousand orienteers took part in one or more days of the students’ weekend event – Friday evening’s urban sprint, Saturday’s long urban and Sunday’s ‘classic’ cross country event on Arthur’s Seat. Very encouragingly more than twenty ELO members were amongst them.
On Friday our top performers were Robin Strain and Michael Atkinson – separated by a few seconds in the top ten of their course.
Saturday saw a fourth place for Joel Atkinson on his course and a third place for Sheila Strain on hers – a useful start to the defence of her 2016 league win.
On Sunday there were solid performances on Green by Peter Brownsort, Martyn Pegg and Ed Hides. Thomas Brownsort did well on Light Green as did Joel Atkinson and Benji Edmondson on Orange. But our best result of the day and of the whole weekend was Emily Atkinson winning the Yellow course.
Ed, Thomas and Peter will all be entering the BOF Rankings later this week when the tables are updated with these results. Peter starts with a very healthy 1123 points score from Sunday.
Both Saturday’s and Sunday’s results count towards BOF Rankings. Saturday also formed the first event in the 2017 urban league (SOUL) and Sunday was the first event in the 2017 South of Scotland league (SoSOL). Later this year ELO will stage events in each of these leagues – our SoSOL is on 26th Feb and our SOUL on 19th May.
Finally Tim Harding deserves an honourable mention for competing and completing on all three days – finding almost one hundred controls in the process with 46 of them featuring in Sunday’s long Brown course alone!

Well done, especially to our juniors!
