Sprintelope 2021 - Informal Urban Orienteering

Sprintelopes are lightweight informal events featuring Urban style races around the streets of towns in East Lothian and other areas in and around Edinburgh on Wednesday evenings.

In 2021, ELO are contributing six races to the series, three of which are on brand new maps!

Thanks

Thanks to our guest planner, Andrea and her assistant, Jon for great courses round Dunbar. There were many very complementary comments at Download. Thanks to Pete for helping at Start, Robin at download, Ian for collecting controls and everyone else who contributed to the success of the evening.

Apologies to those of you who were confused by 6-7 where the printing cut off part of the route and to those of you whose Short course was a little longer than it could have been – we had tried to make it clear. Before your return to Sunny Dunny we will try to improve the mapping of the narrow private lanes off the High Street

Results

Because they are informal, there are only SI units for the start and finish – the rest of the controls are usually drainpipes (which are less conspicuous than flags)!

There will be a long (5km) and a short (3.5km) option although these are straight line distances so expect to run further than that.

Because of the road crossings ALL under 16s must be accompanied at all times by an adult when running.

Pre-event details…

  • Registration must be done in advance online – you can enter one race at a time or the whole series
  • Starts from 18:00 to 19:30
  • Urban Sprint for over 16s or shadowed juniors with SI for Start / Finish only
  • Courses – 5 km with a shorter option of approximately 3.5 km
  • £1 for juniors
  • £2 for full-time students
  • £3 for adults

Location

  • Postcode – EH42 1QZ
  • Grid Ref – NT676784
  • Parking – At Hallhill, at the end of Kellie Road
  • Nearest Toilets – TBC
  • By bus – TBC
  • By train – 5 minute walk from Dunbar station

Because Urban courses involve road crossings, under 16s can only take part if accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

What to Expect

Sprintelopes are informal events and as such there is no electronic punching at most of the controls.

It’s taken on trust that you visit them and instead of looking for a large white and orange kite you are looking for a more discreet white drainpipe which is usually hung on a tree, a drainpipe, a fence etc…

A drainpipe control

The only time you need to “dib” a control is at the start and the finish to record your total time.

At the start there is an all-in-one board to clear, start and then indicate whether you are running the short or the long course.

Start Board

After you’ve punched the long or short option its time to find the rest of the controls (but don’t try to stick your dibber into them as they won’t beep) and enjoy yourself.

You MUST report back to the finish and download even if you don’t manage to find all the controls so that we don’t go out hunting for you!

Control Descriptions

Control descriptions are on the map and can be cut off to get a loose copy if you wish, or you can download them here.

Wednesday evening events continue in the Edinburgh area – please see the Facebook page and the websites of the other clubs for more details Interlopers, ESOC and Roxburgh Reivers for details).

A thorough risk assessment has been carried out. By entering the event your accept that your name may appear in start lists and published results.
