Yellowcraig Saturday 29th October 2022

Event Report

Many thanks to everyone who took part on a busy weekend of orienteering for the Lothians area. Despite the damp weather there was a convivial atmosphere and all of Godfrey’s courses were very well received.

Particular thanks to Godfrey for planning the courses, Robin for setting up and running the SI timing and to Dermot for staying to help collect controls at the end of a long day by the seaside.

Advance Information

Yellowcraig is a mixed coastal area of forest, sand-dunes and open grassland which provides plenty of challenge for new and experienced orienteers. There is an extensive network of paths and ditches through the woods and dunes. The map was updated for the 2016 Scottish Championships.

Orienteers of all abilities are welcome to join us on the day when we will have a range of courses to suit everyone.

Type of event:

Local event in the East of Scotland Orienteering Association (ESOA) series

Yellowcraig Beach

Terrain:

  • Mixed coastal area of forest, sand-dunes and open grassland. There are some nettles throughout the map so full leg cover is recommended.
  • Please observe all out of bounds areas.

Other Users

The area is very well used by the general public including dog walkers and families. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.

Dogs

The area is well used by dog walkers so dogs are welcome to come with orienteers.

Toilets:

Toilets are available at the car park.

Accessibility:

White and Yellow courses use path network and are suitable for rugged buggies although there may be small fallen branches to be moved aside.

Planner’s notes:

  • Only larger paths are marked in the sand dunes and on open areas. The sand dunes are criss-crossed with paths, far too many to map.
  • There is an area of windblown trees in the woodland. This area is in dark green (‘fight’ ) on the map and is labelled as ‘fallen trees’. Courses have been planned to avoid this area completely.
  • Many paths in the woodland are now covered in fallen leaves and may be indistinct.
  • There are two small ‘out of bounds’ areas marked in purple hatching. These must be respected.
  • There are signs for the general public warning of fallen trees. These can be ignored when orienteering.
  • Some areas may be marked out with tape after the maps are printed. Any taped areas must not be entered as there will have been tree felling and may not be safe. Courses are designed to avoid any such areas
