VHI Relays at Binning Wood
21/09/2019
East Lothian was host to an international orienteering event on Saturday 21st September. Binning Wood near Tyningham was the venue for the Veteran Home International Relay races and Trina Rogerson of ELO was the Organiser for the day.
Each of the four ‘home’ nations of Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland fielded teams of 24 – 12 men and 12 women ranging in age from 35 to 70. With three runners per relay team there were eight teams from each country. There are two races – one for teams of male / female / male and another for female / male / teams.
The autumn weather was unusually sunny even for East Lothian and the wood proved a popular setting for this kind of race with the emphasis on ‘fast and furious’ action rather than extreme navigational or physical difficulty.
In the end England took the honours from Scotland in second place with Wales pipping Ireland for third. This pattern was repeated on the following day for the Individual races run jointly with ESOC’s SOL on the Pentland Hills just west of Edinburgh. A summary of the points scored across both days can be found on ESOC’s website.
